You work directly with those tasked to “protect and serve”. You have spent months (and maybe years) supporting those on the front line from behind the scenes. You’ve seen what can happen when employees are working at their optimal level, but you’ve seen the other side too. Something has happened or concerns have been raised, and now you are worried that one of your own may pose a direct threat to themselves or others - or - be unable to perform the essential functions of their job. You suspect that a psychological or cognitive disorder may be the cause. The stakes are incredibly high - for the employee, the organization, and the broader community. You have specific questions that need to be answered as quickly as possible.

You need a police and public safety psychologist.

I’m Dr. Vernon and I help first response departments by offering Fitness for Duty evaluations. Fitness-for-Duty Evaluation Process

Here’s how it works: You’ll prepare for the consultation by clarifying the reason for the evaluation and any timeline requirements. Once we agree to work together, you’ll complete the new client registration and referral form and upload any relevant documents. This is all done electronically, which is important given the time pressures at play. I’ll review the uploaded materials and plan an evaluation unique to the employee’s circumstances. This typically includes review of relevant documentation and records, testing (if appropriate), and interviews with the employee, supervisors, and/or family and friends. After completing a thorough evaluation, I will provide a clear opinion about fitness for duty and considerations for restrictions or accommodations.
